There are many different types of hair. There are thick types and there are fine types of hair. There are curly ones and straight-falling ones. Some hair types are more prone to the accumulation of sebum (the natural oils that our skin secretes) than others, while some hair types are just naturally dry. There are various ways of taking care of hair according to its various types.

But what if your hair happens to be a combination type of hair? What if your hair is very oily near the scalp but has the tendency to be dry to the point of brittleness as the strands reach the ends? How do you take care of hair like that?

Fortunately, there are a number of ways to care for the combination type of hair. With the appropriate use of the right products, you can prevent damage to your hair, protect it, keep it healthy and even enhance its beauty. So how do you effectively care for the combination type of hair?

It all starts with the proper washing of the hair. In shampooing, never use hot water to wet your hair. Hair strands are susceptible to extreme heat and hot water will only damage it. Instead, just use lukewarm water.

Be choosy with the products that you use for your hair. If you have the combination type hair, avoid using shampoos formulated for oily hair. It might worsen the condition of the dry tips of your locks. Instead, opt for shampoos specially made for normal hair.

Do not use too much shampoo to wash your hair. Just a dollop the size of a quarter will do. Apply the shampoo directly on the scalp and just let the suds flow to the ends of your hair. Never apply the shampoo directly to the tips because the shampoo will wash off the oil that your hair tips need so much. If you must, just scoop some suds from the top of your head and use it to wash your hairs tips. Never overclean your hairs ends and be careful in handling them. Rinse the shampoo off carefully and thoroughly until it is not slippery any longer.

After shampooing the hair, apply a rinse-off conditioner. Just as you should never apply shampoo directly to the tips of your hair, you should never apply conditioner directly to your scalp either. The moisturizing agents in the conditioner will cause the scalp to produce too much oil. Instead, concentrate the application of the conditioner to the tips of your hair strands, and then rinse your hair thoroughly, this time with cold water to lock in the moisture and to discourage your hair from secreting too much oil.

For added TLC for your combination type hair, indulge in deep conditioning treatment once a week. Apply moisturizing conditioner to the dry parts of your hair, wrap it with a towel and let it be for a couple of hours before washing it off completely. You can substitute olive oil for commercial conditioner if you wish. Also, make it a habit to have your hair trimmed once every two months to get rid of your hairs brittle ends.

The combination type of hair need not be a hair care nightmare. All it needs to keep healthy and beautiful is the know-how for its proper care.

Secret #1 – Vitamins are a MUST!
Hair specialists love to remind us that it is impossible to alter the rate at which your hair grows. Average hair growth is ½” per month. I am able to speed up my normal growth rate to ¾” each month just by taking supplements for my hair.

All hair vitamins and supplements are not created equal. A multivitamin is the foundational supplement you should always use. This is first and foremost anything else is a bonus.

Hair especially likes B complex, biotin, folic acid, pantothenic acid, iron, zinc, flax seed oil, black currant seed oil, kelp and silica. An amino acid complex can also be used for additional measure.

Secret #2 – Massage Your Scalp
You want your hair stronger and thicker massage your scalp at least 5 minutes each day. You can choose to do it dry, or use an oil or scalp treatment to assist you. A great time to do it is when you are shampooing.

The scalp’s blood supply is activiated when you massage it. The blood brings nutrients to the follicles and that helps the follicles do their work. As an added benefit, scalp massage is a great stress reducer. Keep your stress levels low and you wiull have more beautiful hair.  So you can even get an all-over body massage and that can even help your hair! 

Never use your nails only use the pads of your finger tips. Spread your fingers apart and place them firmly on your head. Start at the base of your neck and work your way up to your front hairline. Move in little circles. You may feel tingly; that’s your improved circulation.

Secret #3 – Wear Your Hair on Top of your head (wear it up)
A lot of people don’t get this one. “What’s the point of having long hair if I have to wear it up all the time?” The point is to have more beautiful, healthy, long hair. Environmental damage happens each time your hair is worn down. The air will dry your hair out. Tangles are caused by the wind and then you have to detangle it – which causes more damage. And finally when your hair rubs up against your clothes it dries it out even more.

Try wearing your hair up at least 50% of the time. By the end of one month, you will notice much less breakage, and less dryness.

Secret #4 – Be Sure to get Regular Trims
“When I’m trying to grow out my hair, why would I get it cut or trimmed?” This is the wrong way of thinking. The last 2 inches of a persons hair can look raggedy and thin and you may not know why. Get a good trim. The ends will be soft, smooth, buttery and thick. Discipline yourself to get small trims every few weeks or when your ends are looking rough and dry.

Your ends are the oldest, driest and most damaged part of your hair. No matter how gentle you are to your hair, the ends split and move farther up the hair shaft. Split ends cause tangles, which leads to breakage and snapping.

Getting trims will also keep the shape of your hair. Since hair grows unevenly, after a couple of months your style can go from chic to shaggy very quickly.

Secret #5 – There are Tricks that will work for You
Here are some great tips that you don’t see too often. Pick one or two, try them for 2 weeks to a month. Then decide if this is the answer to your most gorgeous hair.

• Sleep on a satin pillowcase to prevent damage from tossing and turning.
• If your hair is damaged, use a protein treatment once a week.
• Switch to a boar bristle brush.
• Switch from plastic combs to wooden or cellulose acetate. Plastic combs have molded seams on them that damage your hair cuticle.
• Use distilled water as your final rinse. Tap water leaves mineral deposits on hair that can dull it and damage it.
• If your hair is very dry, don’t shampoo every day.
• If you have fine, thin hair, stay away from volumizing and thickening shampoos. They dry out your hair.
• Stay away from hair accessories with metal in them.

To remove split ends:

• Take small sections of hair and carefully twist them in a gentle downward motion.
  Any split ends will automatically stick out.
• Carefully snip into the twist with sharp scissors. Dont cut right through; just cut into the thickness to remove the damaged cuticles and give a natural layered effect.
• Be careful to cut roughly the same amount from each twist.
